Do you know how Children Develop from birth to the time they enter school? There are many things that can happen to your baby that can cause academic problems when they start school. Some Developmental Delays can cause a child to be slower in learning to talk, learning at school and in learning to socialize with children.
Having a baby and raising that baby is a life changing experience for every parent and for every baby. Because parents do not receive an “Instruction manual” when their baby is born, they can only care for their baby in the way they think is right. Therefore, mistakes or even accidents can sometimes happen at birth or at home. How the parent raises that baby can effect the babies life and determine the outcome of his/her intelligence and academic performance in the future and for the rest of his/her life.

Success Story: Third grade 9 year old Emily & her Developmental Delay problem.
Emily and her parents came to our Cerritos, California Center for help. The parents told us about nine-year old Emily’s problems. She was old enough to be in the fourth grade but she had barley passed to the third. The school was talking about putting Emily back into the second-grade because she was so couldn’t seem to learn or do the third or fourth-grade class work. Her speech sounds were poor. It was very difficult to understand what she was saying. Her level was barely second grade. Her fine motor and large motor skills were poor. Her penmanship was so bad it was impossible to read. She had not learned to ride a bicycle or to skate. She was small and petite and just too tiny for a nine year old girl. At our Center our testing of Emily showed she was at ( 5.7) five years and seven months developmentally, but Chronologically she was 9.3 nine years and three months old. Developmentally she was three years and six months delayed. What happened? What caused Emily to be so far behind?
Several things could cause this delay. If Emily’s mother had a difficult time during her pregnancy. Maybe she was sick a lot or she had a hard fall and was bed-fast for several weeks. In some cases, if Mom drank alcohol regularly and smoked heavily during the pregnancy the baby can be delayed developmentally. There are different things that can cause the baby to be immature or Developmentally Delayed. This can cause the baby to be slow learning to speak and talk. Some children are slow learning colors, learning to ride a bicycle or to skate. Some are slow with learning in school. If the baby was “blue” at birth because of lack of Oxygen or had some kind of difficulty during the birthing process, these may cause maturity problems and development problems in the baby. After the baby is born, if some kind of head trauma happens at home. The baby is in an automobile accident or even falling down the stairs causing a head concussion may cause problems. Ear infections, fevers, high temperatures, or even some types of severe illnesses can cause the baby to be under-developed. The list of causes can go on and on. Emily’s parents put her in the Nadeau Therapy Program and in six months, her progress was unbelievable. In all Emily was in our therapy program for twelve months. She caught up to her chronological age. The last we heard she is now doing good in school.

Children develop in many different areas and ways at different time schedules and some of these are difficult to measure. While physical growth and maturity are the most obvious signs that child development is occurring, children also develop cognitively (mentally), socially, emotionally, and sexually. Mental and emotional development can be more difficult to measure.
The first area of child development you can see and measure is physical development, which occurs in several important ways. Obviously, children grow in size and weight and these are easy to measure. As time goes on, they also become better able to move themselves around physically and to manipulate objects. Then as they age their Sensory System becomes better developed and more refined.
Lets look at the babies physical development and sensory development. As infants grow, they begin to touch objects in their environment with their hands, feet, and mouth to learn about them. When babies put toys and other things in their mouth, they are not trying to taste them as much as they are trying to feel the texture and structure. They are learning. This is a part of good child development.
Babies that are properly stimulated, cared for, and loved will actually develop faster, and more robustly, than babies who were neglected. The Babies' five senses can be stimulated in many ways. Babies literally need touch and affection from their parents, mother and father, in order to grow and thrive properly. Researchers say Child Development in babies who do not receive the appropriate touch and affection from their parents may ultimately have developmental learning problems in school. Good child development is very important. Whether you’re a first time parent, or a parent with older children, during the “day-time / awake hours” you must remember that babies need to be on their belly, having “tummy time” on the floor MOST of their “day time / awake hours”. Research studies prove this to be very important. Here are two important reasons. First reason: This is important, so babies have an opportunity to begin the development of all those primary muscles in their arms, back, neck and legs. Second reason: Research shows babies intelligence develops and grows twice as fast when spending most of their time on their belly on the floor. So mom and dad, you’re the parents, it’s up to you to make sure your child’s brain development is on schedule. By doing this while your child is a baby, will make a big difference in your child’s intelligence and overall development. This will benefit your children for the rest of their life.
A very important and necessary step for developing your babies brain is making sure your baby crawls on the floor military style on his/her tummy for several weeks or months. Placing you baby on his tummy on a wood floor or on a floor that is smooth and easy for him to scoot and move forward. This is important so he/she can crawl forward to explore and learn. When your baby has completed this developmental stage of crawling, he/she will then begin trying to get up on his hands and knees to creep forward. Your baby will know when the brain is developed enough and the time is right for him/her to begin this next step of development. At first your baby will begin raising up on hands and knees just to look around the room. He/She will fall several times before learning how to begin creeping forward. Babies may begin to creep on their hands and knees at around age 7 or 8 months. Some babies start sooner and some later. Once your baby learns how to creep and move forward on hands and knees he/she will soon be moving forward rapidly to explore and discover every thing in the room.
Your baby needs to creep on hands and knees for several months. At this point, some parents make a big mistake by encouraging and rushing their baby to stand up and walk. Some parents believe that if their child walks early, it is a sign of intelligence. This is a BIG Mistake. If you want your child to be highly intelligent and well developed, encourage your baby to continue creeping on hands and knees as long as possible. Your baby will know when it is time to try to learn walking. Babies who do not crawl enough on their tummy and creep enough on hands and knees, may suffer from big learning problems later on in school. Creeping on hands and knees patterns, programs and organizes the babies brain. Research has proven these important steps of crawling and creeping improves the child’s intelligence and gets the child’s brain ready for complex learning. Some experts say, “If you want to increase your child’s intelligence, have him crawl and do lots of creeping on the floor.”
Walkers are another thing that can delay and hinder your babies proper Development. The use of baby walkers, jumpers, swings or devices that hold babies upright while they push with their legs to move around the room, should absolutely NOT be used. Many child development specialists believe these devises that are being used today in such great number are causing problems. They say this might be the reason why we are seeing so many immature and developmentally delayed children today. Research has found that the use of these devices may prevent babies from developing their brain and their intelligence as well as their physical torso and leg strength that is necessary for walking. Many times this can lead to poor coordination with difficulty in walking or running in sports. Research has found with absolute certainty, that the use of these devices slow down the child’s brain development. This child may not be as intelligent as he/she could have been. This may also cause learning problems and learning disabilities for these children later when they reach six to ten years of age. For this reason, walkers, jumpers and other similar devices should NOT be used. Do not buy these walkers and jumpers and other similar devices so there will be no temptation to put your baby in them.
Near age three, toddlers begin to develop complex gross motor skills such as throwing objects for distance and kicking. They normally can jump in place and balance on one foot for a short time period and may begin riding and pedaling their first tricycle. By this age, toddlers are normally very mobile and can run and walk quickly from one place to another. Babies who are delayed in their brains development, because of not crawling or creeping long enough, or babies who experienced an illness or some head trauma that brought injury to the brain, may not make these milestones of proper child development on schedule. Good parenting skills can help smooth out some of the inevitable bumps and bruises that might threaten to derail some of the temperamental children. Though all parents will make some mistakes, love, attention, and proper care provide a strong foundation for healthy child development.
Here is the good news. Yes, babies who are Developmentally Delayed and Immature can catch up. Usually they catch up in just a few months, some times it takes a little longer. We help many first grade, second and third grade children who are 6 or 8 years old chronically, but their Maturity age and their Developmental age may only be 3 to 5 years old. As a parent, IF you know there is a problem, but you don’t Know what to do to help your child, let us help you get started now.

3 easy Steps to Help Dyslexia?
Success Story: 11 year old Patrick
The word dyslexia comes from the Greek language meaning ‘difficulty with words.’ Therefore, researchers say Dyslexia is a language disorder. This is why it creates difficulties in language areas like reading, spelling, cursive writing and auditory processing and any area related to the use of language. You can see why this disorder makes life difficult for dyslexic children and adults. Every thing about school uses language skills. Also today there are many jobs that require adults to have good language skills. Correcting learning disabilities in your child will change their life. Your child’s
self image and confidence will change and everyone will notice the difference.
Read about our Success Story Patrick, eleven years old.
When 11 year old Patrick was tested in our Nadeau Educational Center, he was diagnosed with an Inner Ear Disorder and Dyslexia. He also had Attention Deficit Disorder. We are not medical doctors. We are Educational Therapist, licensed by the State of California to work with many different types of Learning Disabilities. Patrick’s diagnoses is known as Dyslexia caused by an Inner Ear Disorder. This Over-reactive type of Dyslexia is the kind we find in some of the Children who come to our Center for testing. From the testing we learned Patrick has a condition that allows an excessive amount of (out-side stimulation) to flood his brain through one or more of his five sensory channels. When this happens, it can cause an overload to his brain. This over-load can cause Patrick to experience extreme amounts of stress, anxiety, depression and frustration. It can also cause other severe emotional problems for him.
Eleven year old Patrick has many of the Typical Symptoms of Dyslexia. For example, Patrick is prone to Car Sickness on long trip. He said he dislikes and avoids amusement park rides, like the spinning rides at Disney Land. His parents said he has sleep disorders like insomnia and nightmares. He often has a Nervous stomach with Stomachaches. They also said Patrick has out of control behavior problems, with outburst of uncontrolled anger and rage. They said his poor self image, low self esteem, his panic attacks, anxiety attacks, and crying jags, often give him feelings of depression. Patrick said he has headaches several days a week and at school he rubs his eyes a lot and complained about his eyes being tired. He has lots of tension and stress which makes it difficult for him when taking tests at school. His parents said he is often depressed. They also said he is moody and has mood swings. Patrick often appears to be forgetful, and he’s always writing notes to remember things. His mother said he has poor socialization skills. She said he would rather spend hours alone in his bedroom, than to play outdoors with his friends. Patrick told us he was a procrastinator. He said he was always putting off completing his homework assignments.
It’s not all bad news though. We find many of these dyslexic children have above average intelligence. Many of them have above average God given talents in music, or in art, like drawing pictures, or painting pictures. Some famous painters in history were dyslexics. Also in history, many famous musicians were dyslexics. Some dyslexic people are talented in arranging flowers or furniture in a room or decorating the home. Dyslexics usually have many different God given talents. They are usually creative and artistically gifted in art and handcrafts. They are talented in making things and enjoy doing many things with their hands like fixing things when something is broken. Remember, if you or your child has dyslexia, there may be a Genius hiding inside that brain .
However, what about school and these Dyslexic kids like Patrick? Every day at school, these children are experiencing failure, because Dyslexia affects academic skills. They cannot do their class assignments. They do not understand the teacher’s instructions. They do not know what to do in class, so they just sit and do nothing. Most of these children have an Auditory Processing Deficit. They hear the teacher explaining the assignments, but they can’t comprehend what’s being said. Other children in class are able to understand and do the assignments. The dyslexic child is always asking, “Why is it I cannot do the class work”? They feel dumb and stupid and it’s confusing to them. This often results in causing these dyslexic children to have low self-esteem. They are often frustrated and they develop a severe loss of self-worth and self-confidence, which can cause any child to dislike school. This is what was happening to 11-year-old Patrick. Every day he saw other children getting their class work done, they were making good grades, and he felt something was wrong with him. At this point, he hated school and did not want to go back to class. He thought about running away from home so he would not have to go to school. Patrick’s life was very unhappy and something had to be done.
This is when parents of dyslexic kids begin seeking help and asking for advice from friends or neighbors. This is often the time when they come to the Nadeau Educational Center for help. In the fifty years of working with dyslexia children and adults, we have learned that these children’s problems appear to be different in several ways. No two are exactly alike.
Many researchers in this field believe some kind of damage to the brains Cortex could have occurred while the unborn child was still in the womb. Or they say it could have happened in the birthing process. On the other hand, it may have happened from some kind of head trauma in the first few years of the child’s life. Ear infections with high temperatures may be the cause in some children. Others have said it could be inherited from parents or grandparents.
The most noticeable thing about Dyslexic children, is the confusion and extreme difficulty organizing their thoughts and ideas. Sometimes it can cause stuttering, stammering or speech hesitations. Also reversal of words and letters and sometimes transposing numbers, may be symptoms.
We designed a Therapy Program for Patrick based on his test results. This was designed to treat each of his problems. The work began. These therapies were taught to the parents so they could work with him a few minutes a day at home. Other therapies were going to be done during one visit per week at our Cerritos Center. In the first three weeks, we could tell it was working. Patrick was responding to the therapies. In five months, Patrick had become a changed young man. He was enjoying school for the first time ever. He was now making good grades on his report card. His parents were overjoyed with his newfound success. Patrick’s life was now changed. Now he was happy. He could feel success at school for the first time in his life. Each day when he arrived home, he could not stop talking about school and how much fun it was.
When asked how the Nadeau Method is different from other Educational Centers, we explain that we are different in the way we approach children’s problems. First, we do Neurological Testing to learn what problems the child has and what area of the child’s brain is causing their problem. We test the Cortex, the Brain Stem, the Midbrain and the Vestibular areas.
After all the testing is completed, we study the results, and then we design a therapy program to correct the problems for each child. Each child’s therapies are different and unique. We use Sensory Integration Therapies that stimulate and exercise the child’s Midbrain when the child’s problem is developmental or poor coordination and maturity.
When the child has ADD/ADHD we use therapies designed to correct the problems found in the Cortex. We may also coordinate other types of therapies to help the child in other areas of his life. For an example, we may combine EEG Neuro-feedback with Music Therapy plus a strong Nutritional program, when we feel the child needs it. Sometimes we add Vision Therapies or Speech and Language Therapies to the child’s total therapy program. For a few children we may add therapies to stop bed-wetting or stuttering.
If your child’s Pediatrician or the Teacher at school has said your Child has Dyslexia, here are 15 pages of Sensory Motor Therapies with detailed Instructions for you to do at HOME. More than Five-hundred fifty Parents have already used these Sensory Motor Therapies at Home on their Own Dyslexic Children with Great Success. We believe they will HELP your Child too.

Researches of Autistic Spectrum Disorders, believe in the first year or two of life, when Autism symptoms appear, these brain synapses rapidly form and mature, and unnecessary ones are "pruned" back. In other words, a baby's brain is literally being shaped by its first experiences so that it can become structurally able to perform learning and other high level functions for later life. Researchers also said, "We find that hopeful" because "there are new ways that are being discovered to activate new genes in the brain." "This might be an unanticipated way of developing sensory motor therapies in the long term for Autism. We have trouble getting through to these children, but with repeated sensory motor stimulation we can do it," they said. "These are brain circuits that have an ability not so much to recover, but to train the surrounding circuits and cells to work and do the normal function of the Autistic problem circuits." Dr. Thomas Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health, suggests and believes that the genetics of these Autistic children prove that "what we're doing with Sensory Motor Therapies makes sense. When we use all kinds of therapies with these little Autistic kids, we work and work and suddenly break through," he said. “After a lot of repetitive Sensory Motor Therapies it starts to make an improved difference on these autistic children.”

Success Story: Seven Year Old Steven
Steven’s pediatrician diagnosed him with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Steven was brought to our Center for help. His parents said Steven is off in his own world. As he stares out in space, it’s like he has a hearing delay especially when processing individual sounds. They said, sometimes we talk to him but he does not react or even acknowledge us. Most of the time he appears to ignore us, as well as other children. They said he also seems to be very immature with Social Skills, Social Interaction and he has immature verbal communication skills even when he tries to talk or communicate to us. Steven can spend hours looking at some object like a toy or a piece of string. Sometimes he would just sit for long periods and look at or feel the buttons on his clothing. They said Steven makes very little physical eye contact with them, or with others. They said he does not try to imitate speech sounds or try to talk to his siblings. Another symptom they notice is frequent Self Stemming with Repetitious behaviors. Here are examples they gave. Steven will frequently wave or shake his hands and arms in the air out to his sides. Mom says this happens a lot. Sometimes you may see him rocking forward or side ways while gazing out into space. This can happen while he is sitting or standing. Mom also says she may notice him biting his fingers or biting his hands and he often puts his fingers or hands in his mouth. He pokes at his eyes and does repetitive head banging. Mom said, when he was younger they noticed he liked to play with a wet diaper. Sometimes he would even put the diaper up to his nose. Mom told me she had to keep dirty diapers up out of his reach when he was young. If she didn’t he would sometimes play in his own feces. She said he was always attracted to strong odors.
In recent years, Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a Neurological and Developmental Disorder, has shown dramatic increase according to many Pediatricians diagnoses of their young patience’s. In a recent study of the prevalence of Autistic Spectrum Disorder, a Developmental Disorder, it shows to have substantially increased in just the last five or six years.
At the our Center, a Study Was Made of two groups of diagnosed Autistic Spectrum Disorder children.
“Group A” was composed of 13 Autistic Spectrum Disorder children. There were 9 boys and 4 girls. Seven year old Steven was in this group. “Group A” received the Nadeau Method of Brain Training which included EEG Neuro-feedback sessions and the Nadeau Home therapies. The Home Therapy Program consisted of Sensory Integration therapies administered by the parents at home under our supervision.
“Group B” composed of 10 children diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder, 6 were boys and 4 were girls. This “Group B” Did Not receive the Nadeau Method of Brain Training. Neither did they receive the Nadeau Home Therapies, 24 weeks of sensory integration therapies to do at home.
At the Beginning of this study, no significant differences could be detected between the children in “Group A” and “Group B” as to the severity of their Autistic Spectrum symptoms. These two groups were very similar when we compared their symptoms and test results.
THE END RESULTS: The findings of this Autistic Spectrum Disorder study showed all 13 children in “Group A” made impressive amounts of progress and improvement. Remember, Steven our Case Study was in this group. His parents were very happy with all the good changes Steven made. The re-testing at the end of this study showed all of Group “A” including Steven, had improved performance in attention span, impulsivity and learning skills. They also made significant amounts of improvement in the areas of social interaction skills and language skills. Their auditory and visual perception also improved. Of these 13 children, eleven showed significantly more improvement than the others. Steven was one of these eleven children that made significant amounts of improvement. We believe all this was due to the dedication of their parents doing the home therapy programs. This improvement was seen only with “Group A” of the Autistic Spectrum children. This study covered a period of 24 weeks. All 13 children received the Nadeau Method of Brain-Training sessions which included EEG Neuro-feedback and the Nadeau Home therapies which were 24 weeks of sensory integration therapies. The parents at home administered these sensory integration therapies under our supervision.
Re-testing also showed that 89% of the “Group A” had a big Decrease in hyperactivity symptoms. In the beginning of this study, we made an effort to insure that the severity of Autistic Spectrum symptoms of the two groups were about the same. In our Autistic Spectrum Disorder study, we made an effort to insure that nothing extraneous could interact in any way with the effect of the outcome. The amazing results of this study shows the Nadeau Method of Brain Training which included EEG Neuro-feedback, plus the Nadeau Home Program of sensory integration therapies that parents administered at home under our supervision, was responsible for the BIG Improvement made with “Group A” children. Therefore, it is believed that the which includes EEG Neuro-feedback, plus the Nadeau Home Therapy Program administered by the parents, was the only factor responsible for improving the Autistic Spectrum Disorder symptoms in these “Group A” children.
Children in “Group B” made No significant changes or improvements during this 24-week study, according to their parent’s observations and the parents rating of their child’s severity of symptoms.
This study done with “Group A” children and “Group B” children proved beyond any doubt, that the Nadeau Method of Brain Training works.
At the end of this Article, you can access and download 15 pages of the same Autistic Spectrum therapies we use when treating these children at our Center. We are providing all parents of Autistic Spectrum children the same therapies we use with great success.
At our Center, we use a battery of tests that are designed to test the total child. Testing is done to learn if the Autistic Spectrum child may also have some other problem, like Bipolar Disorder or Attention Deficit Disorder, ADHD or a Learning Disability or maybe some other disorder. Test are also performed to learn if the child has “hypo or hyper” Sensory Problem.
Once all this testing is completed and evaluated, we then design a Home Therapy program for the child’s specific problems. The parents can do these therapies at home. The parents can spend 20 minutes a day, five days a week doing these therapies at home with their child. We have found these Home Therapy Programs to be very successful in treating the Autistic Spectrum child. We are Child Development Specialist with over Fifty Years experience. We are Educational Therapist, Licensed by the State of California to help children.

Success Story: Danny, age 10
Unable to concentrate or learn , poorly coordinated and extremely shy, it was no wonder that ten year old Danny felt inferior and had few friends. After several other attempts to find answers for their son’s learning disability, his parents took him to Southern California to see Child Development Specialists at the Nadeau Educational Center.
Extensive testing was done at the Nadeau Educational Center over a period of several hours. The testing revealed that Danny had a learning disability due to a neurological and developmental disorder. This also caused problems with his coordination. He could not learn at school, and his penmanship was illegible. He was making failing grades in all his classes. He hated school and wanted to run away from home.
After complete diagnostic testing, a Home Therapy Program of Sensory Motor games with Integrated Therapies designed to correct Danny’s individual problems. Danny’s parents were taught how to correctly administer the daily therapy program at home. These therapies took about 35 minutes a day, five days a week. The therapy program was designed to correct his night terrors, his poor penmanship, his learning problems and his poor coordination. Danny’s parents also decided to take Danny to our Center for the Nadeau Method of Brain Training. This included the EEG Neuro-feedback Brain Training and Sensory Motor Therapy sessions.
Five months after beginning his therapy program, Danny’s reading scores approached grade level. His report card grades showed remarkable improvement. Probably most important to Danny, his confidence soared with his newfound skills. His social skills and his coordination had made so much improvement that children began choosing him for their team during playground activities.
The Nadeau Method of Brain Training corrects the cause of learning problems not just the symptoms. We believe the cause of most learning problems is a neurological dysfunction. Therefore, the Nadeau Method of Brain Training Therapies are designed to treat the central nervous system. The purpose of the Nadeau Method is to eliminate the problem, not just help the child cope with it.” The Nadeau Educational Center is nationally known for it’s work with children.
When we talk about Learning Disabilities, we’re speaking of a condition that affects up to 12 million children in the United States. The term Learning Disability includes difficulties in reading, writing, spelling, arithmetic and with learning at school. These Learning Disabled children are sometimes poorly coordinated and clumsy in sports. They are usually frustrated and discouraged at their inability to learn in school. These children often develop behavior problems to compensate for their inability to learn and perform academically. In High School, they often drop out. All these problems quickly disappear when a child receives the Nadeau Method of Brain Training to correct this condition.
In the United States and Canada the term learning disability (LD) refers to a group of disorders that affect a broad range of academic and functional skills including the ability to speak, listen, read, write, spell, reason and organize information. A learning disability does not mean the child has low intelligence. Research has documented that many people with learning disabilities have above-average intelligence.
Auditory Processing Deficit: Another disorder that is often found in children is an auditory processing disorder. Difficulty with processing auditory information may include difficulty comprehending more than one task at a time and may show a relatively stronger ability to learn visually. The causes for learning disabilities are not well understood, and sometimes there is no apparent reason. At our Center, when we test children with learning disabilities, we often find a neurological problem. Sometimes it is a developmental problem. Both of these are treatable and correctable. Some causes of neurological impairments include genetics or heredity . Learning disabilities often run in the family. In addition, problems during pregnancy and birth can cause learning problems. Also we’ve learned that Learning disabilities can result from anomalies in the developing brain. It can result from illness or injury, or fetal exposure to alcohol or drugs. It can also be the result of low birth weight, or oxygen deprivation at birth and premature or prolonged labor. Then another cause we see are accidents after birth. Learning disabilities can also be caused by head injuries, malnutrition, or by toxic exposure, such as heavy metals or pesticides. Many things can happen to a child that may cause a need for correcting learning disabilities.

Success Story: 8 year old Matthew
Matthew was tested at the Nadeau Center in Cerritos California. He was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. ADD/ADHD is Diagnosed when a child has certain Behavior Patterns and actions that are out of the ordinary when compared to other children. Matthews parents said he was very difficult to raise due to these particular temperament traits that characterize ADD/ADHD children.
Yet these attention deficit hyperactive disorder, ADD/ADHD, children have many very positive traits. Matthew displayed spontaneity, creativity and the ability to lock on and hyper-focus on tasks of his own choosing. This does present some potential problems though. These attention deficit hyperactive children like Matthew have Selective attention span, but they have high distractibility, impulsivity and sometimes hyperactivity. These traits can work to Matthews’s advantage or disadvantage. These children manifest these symptoms in varying combinations and to varying degrees.
ADD/ADHD is Not a deficit in Attention. A deficit means a “lack of something.” What ADD really means is that Matthew has two extremes of focus or attention. These ADD/ADHD children are NOT good at paying attention to things that they find boring. Yet they can focus intently or “hyper-focus” on things that catch their interest or on things they choose, like playing video games. This can be a real advantage when Matthew is creating something or trying to build a project he is interested in or one that he may initiate. This can be a disadvantage when his condition prevents him from paying attention to things the teacher finds important, like when she is teaching or explaining an important assignment in his class.
For an example, this ADD/ADHD child may spend four or five hours drawing and making a beautiful cover-page for a class notebook or project but spend little or no time on the projects content. This will not earn a good grade from the teacher. You could probably say children with ADD do Not have an attention deficit as much as they have “selective attention.” There are also problems with impulsivity, distractibility and sometimes hyperactivity. Behavior problems and Academic underachievement is a frequent complaint we heard from Matthews teachers and his parents.
These children are just different from other children, just like being left handed is different. As with left-handedness, the difference is related to the way the persons Brain Works. The same is true for the ADD/ADHD child.
The tag ADD/ADHD is not a judgment as to weather a child is good or bad. It’s just a term we use to describe how Matthew thinks and acts.
We feel it’s important to look at the positive as well as the negative aspects of ADD. With almost every ADHD child or adult we test, we find they are highly intelligent, very smart people, but they appear to be low functioning with academics in the class room. Yet they are very smart, but because of their ADHD disorder, they cannot pay attention in class and they have trouble taking tests and passing tests. Matthew has behavior problems, and he gets in trouble in class. He simply cannot control his impulsive actions or his impulses in general.
Dr. Russell Barkley says, ADD/ADHD effects the normal functioning of the frontal lobe of the brains cortex. The first thing to show up with this loss of brainpower is the child’s inability to control their urges or impulses. He goes on to say there are four kinds of basic compulsions. These urges are intended to help the child survive, and take priority during stress. The brain function that normally keeps these urges in check is the behavioral “inhibition system”. This is one important function of the cortex brain.
Dr. Russell Barkley goes on to list these four kinds of compulsions.
This list gives us a good description of every ADHD child and adult.
- The Urge to Feel Good. The first untamed urge is a spring-loaded drive to get the immediate reward from the environment. He wants what he wants and he wants it now. In addition, he takes no thought for the consequences.
- The Urge to Escape. The second untamed urge is a spring-loaded drive to get away from the unpleasant and uncomfortable things in the environment. He wants to feel better now. He escapes regardless of the consequences.
- The Urge to Keep at It. The third untamed urge is a drive to continue on with a behavior or course of action, regardless of the consequences. This loss of sensitivity to error leaves the ADD child “clueless”. Signals and warnings that call for caution or change are ignored, unseen or unheeded. He/she keeps at it until he/she hits a wall.
- The Urge to Scan It All. The fourth untamed urge is a drive to scan the environment continually. He hears every sound. He sees every sight and Every sense is keen and on alert. He has a constant vigilance and He/She is constantly overwhelmed by everything around him/her.
What Causes the ADHD Child to Act This Way?
ADHD has been a mystery for many years. Only in the last thirty to forty years medical research and educational research has learned so many new and interesting things about this ADD/ADHD disorder.
Researchers believe this suggest a strong neurological basis which means that people with ADHD lack a normal inhibiting process in their Cortex Brain. They cannot control their behavior or their responses to whatever impulses arise. It’s like an uncontrollable leg reflex.
In New York, another medical research team found the brains arousal system and certain areas of the Cortex, is not receiving sufficient stimulation to maintain a normal inhibiting process. They believe the inhibiting processor in the cortex is asleep or drowsy. In other words this important part of the brain in ADHD children need more stimulation than it is presently receiving.
At the Nadeau Center, we have studied ADHD children for a large part of our fifty years in business. We’ve found several possible causes for this under active condition in the child’s Cortex brain that is causing the Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. There are two or three possible causes for this abnormal function of the child’s inhibiting processor. It’s possible at some time in the child’s life or even in the mothers womb, there was something that caused an injury to the child’s brain. There are also things like severe illnesses that can cause a delay in the child’s natural development. Some researchers believe that difficulties during pregnancy or delivery may cause a problem. Also if the mother was a smoker, consumed alcohol or was on cocaine or drugs during pregnancy could be a possible cause of ADHD. Some believe oxygen deprivation at birth or ear infections with high temperatures or even allergies could cause ADHD in children. It’s very difficult to determine the exact cause of ADHD in every child.
The important thing is, we know how to correct this Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. The good news is we can treat this disorder and our success rate for correcting ADHD is above 89 percent. Correcting learning disabilities of this kind is what we specialize in.
At the Nadeau Center, we recently got very excited when we saw the success of our treatment for Matthew, a super severe Hyperactive 8 year old boy, who five months before, was expelled from school because of his ADHD behavior. Now Matthew is calm and is totally off the Adderall medication he was on for more than three years. Now he is really proud of his good grades and proud of himself in general. He said, “Now I can control my behavior.” “Before the Nadeau Program, I couldn’t control it”.
Important facts about ADD/ADHD:
About two million school age children in the United States have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ADD/ADHD. Boys diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactive disorder A.D.H.D. out number girls three to one. The diagnosis of ADD is not based on laboratory tests. It is based on observations made by parents, teachers and ADD/ADHD professionals. Children usually do not grow out of their ADHD though there is less hyperactivity when they become adults. If ADD goes unrecognized and untreated , twenty to thirty percent of these children may run into trouble with the law in their early teens or in their late teens. A survey of the driving record of people with attention deficit hyperactive disorder, shows they have more traffic tickets and more car accidents, where people are injured, than the people who are not ADHD/ADD.
Our success rate is over 89 percent. A survey of former clients show, five to ten years after completing the Nadeau Therapy Program, the ADD/ADHD clients are still off their medications and are still experiencing great success.
